24 Questions People Ask Us About Living In An RV

We never thought we would own an RV!  And definitely never thought we’d make one our house and live stationary at RV Park.  With our lifestyle comes a lot of questions. Here are answers to 24 FAQ’s we get.

1. How do you shower or go to the bathroom?

Our RV has a bathroom that includes a shower, sink, toilet and storage closet.  We shower like normal people do. Our RV includes a toilet that flushes into a holding tank under the RV.  Once the reader inside the RV tells us the tanks are full, we go outside to dump them. And yes, like everyone, we’ve had the black tank attack in the beginning trying to learn to dump tanks (RV newbies beware).

2. How do you wash your clothes?

Our RV has washer/dryer hookups but we opted to not install it yet. We use that space for additional closet storage and opted to use the laundry facility at the campground.  I thought I would HATE that but it actually has been nice to get all the laundry done at the same time.

3. Are your neighbors weird?

We don’t like to consider anyone “weird” per se and our neighbors have been great people so far.  It doesn’t mean you become best friends with them all but we’ve found good ones. And the good thing with an RV is if there’s space you can move spots!

4. How do you get power and water?

We live at an RV Park and have a full-hookups spot that includes power, water and sewer. We plug into the 50amp power supply at our spot and hook our water hose up to the water supply at our site.

5. What did your family think?

This question makes us laugh the most!  Our family thought we were joking and were just crazy as hell.  I mean we were going from our house, to apt and at first to an 18ft RV.  Over time and seeing the lifestyle, they think it’s pretty cool. We’ve also now taken the RV home to MD and SC.

6. Do you work from home?

Unlike many full-timers, we do not work from home or on the road.  We both have full-time jobs we go to each day, like many American families.  Will works in video for NFL team and I work as an Assistant Athletic Director in college. Our RV stays stationary especially during football season and we travel a lot from Feb-mid-July.

7. How did you decide to do that?

There’s no one answer to this but a multitude of reasons.  The biggest being we loved it and wanted to enjoy our RV all year.  We knew that wouldn’t be possible in football season and it would sit in storage.  Check out our How Did We End of Living In An RV post for the full story.

8. What kind of truck do you tow with?

We currently tow with a Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi.  That is not what we recommend. Although we have traveled all over and it’s made it, it’s not the ideal tow vehicle.  Airbags have been installed on our Ram too.  We plan to get a bigger truck at least a 2500/250 and we’d recommend that to others.

9. Do you get tired of a small living space?

Actually not really.  With the 18ft RV we did more so but with the Keystone Outback, it offers the additional space we need.  We have a separate bedroom and living room/kitchen.

10. How do you get your mail?

We have a PO Box that we get mail delivered to.  We are stationary so this works for us. We get any packages delivered to the campground we live at. We have a mailbox at the campground or large items are delivered to the office and they notify us.  If full-timing on the road, we’d suggest setting up a mail forwarding service.

11. What about when you have children?

We don’t really have an answer for this.  We may move back to our house or we may get a rig that has a floor plan that works. We shall see!

12. What’s the craziest thing that happen living in your RV?

There was a heavy rain storm that came and we kept wondering where water inside was coming from.  We didn’t have any cracks or holes.  Finally, we figured out it came in through the furnace vent outside. Berries and leaves from the tree above clogged the roof gutter.

As a result, water was forced down the side of the RV straight into that opening that blows the air out. Since that area is inside the wall between the kitchen and bathroom, we had to cut a hole in the bottom wall to access it and clean up.

13. Why don’t you have a TV show?

Surprisingly to us, we get asked this question often. Honestly, we don’t know.  I guess because we never thought about having one or don’t know if our lives are interesting enough to pitch it.

BUT, we did just premier on Season 7 of GACTV’s show Going RV! Look out for future post about that experience. Here’s a few behind-the-scenes pics.

14. Will you ever go back to a house or apartment?

Some days we do miss our house.  We were fortunate to build that house right before we got married.  Right now, we really enjoy this RV Life and will decide when the time comes. But at least we still have our house as an option.

15. Do you cook in the RV?

Yes! Most of the time we cook at home.  We live stationary so it’s similar to our house.  We actually do a lot of cooking outdoors on the outdoor stove or our grill.  Once it gets really cold, we’ll move more indoors.

16. How were you able to downsize?

That was definitely tricky and it was a process.  We went from house to apt to RV so that helped as we got smaller and smaller. Although, we never had plans to live in the RV, it’s been quite the experience. You definitely have to change your mindset of needs and wants. Check out this article Downsizing to Live in an RV for a peak into the process.

17. Does Britta ever drive the truck?

HAHA HELL NO! I help pack up, guide him for parking and unpack.  Maybe once we get a bigger truck. But, I do know how to do make sure I know how to do everything on the rig which is still helpful.

18. How do you get food or groceries?

We are usually close to some kind of grocery store whether stationary or traveling.  We put groceries in our fridge just like you would normally.

19. Why did you pick that RV?

Here’s what was important to us:

-Couch directly facing the tv, not angled

-Outdoor Kitchen

-35 Feet and Under (we went beyond this to get all we wanted)

-Closet for clothes

-Some storage for other items

-Full bathroom (shower, sink, storage, toilet)

-Updated appliances/decor

-Windows for plenty light

-Under $50,000

-Washer/Dryer Hookup(wasn’t a deal breaker)

You can find out more on this question by watching our Going RV episode referenced in question #13!

20. What is your favorite trip in the RV?

We can’t pick a favorite.  Our top ones are:

-Sea Cliff State Beach in Northern California

-Driving cross country from California to Michigan

-Camping in the infield for 4 days at Michigan Speedway for Nascar Race

-Summer 2018 (Nashville, Myrtle Beach and Maryland) – 1st time showing the Keystone Outback to our families

21. How do you find the RV Park?

I leave this to Will!  He is the best at this.  We are more the “bougie” RVers/ Glampers.

RV Parks to live we consider : allows mail packages, pricing, landscaping of property, proximity to work, how maintained neighbors properties are

RV Parks for travel, we consider: more resort style with amenities, nicely landscaped, close to attractions, general store, and pool

22.Do you have a lease or month to month?

We live at our RV Park on a month-to-month basis but we let them know we plan to stay long term.  They don’t rent out the spot unless we tell them we plan on leaving.

23. How much does your RV spot cost?

$650/month with water and sewer included.  Electric is separate and metered(it’s Michigan, y’all. It’s expensive to heat in the Winter).

24. Why not hit the road full-time?

Right now, we honestly have the best of both worlds.  We still have things we want to accomplish in our careers but we also get to travel with work and with our RV.  Also, after doing a 20-day road trip, we realized how tiring it can get and that we aren’t ready to fully hit the road.
